Elba Island is divided into seven municipalities:
Portoferraio is the capital of the island and hosts the main port where 90% of the ferries connecting the Tuscan coast to the Elba Island arrive. It is the largest city on the island and is also famous for being Napoleon's temporary residence during his forced exile.
Marina di Campo is part of the municipality of Campo nellā€˜Elba, a seaside resort, known for its long, wide beach of golden sand. It is the perfect location for those wishing to visit the island of Pianosa as excursions leave from its village harbour. The easily accessible village and beach make it a particularly suitable destination for families with children. Other well-known sandy beaches such as Cavoli and Fetovaia are also part of the municipality's territory.
Capoliveri is located high up on a hill. It is a picturesque town with narrow characteristic streets, artisan shops and a spectacular panoramic view of the coast and the numerous beaches and coves that characterise its territory.

Marciana is the oldest municipality on Elba and includes almost the entire western side of the island. The expanse of the municipality of Marciana includes the highest peak on the Elba Island, the Mount Capanne, and numerous seaside resorts such as Procchio, Sant'Andrea, Pomonte and Chiessi.
Marciana Marina is the smallest municipality in Tuscany and one of the most famous coastal resorts on the island, known for its tourist port and the seaside promenade with characteristic restaurants and shops. The film set of the popular TV series ā€œBar Lumeā€ is also located there.
Porto Azzurro is instantly recognisable by its lovely granite and terracotta village square which overlooks the sea and tourist port.
The village is surrounded by restaurants and cafes and is also appreciated in winter for its natural exposure to the sun. It offers a lively nightlife which makes the area popular among younger people.
Rio is steeped in mining history. It has several beautiful beaches and a particular atmosphere with rich, earthy colours. It is home to the Mineral Museum and the Mine Park of the Elba Island.
The other two ports connecting to the continent are part of this municipality and are to be found at Rio Marina with its ferry service and Cavo with its hydrofoil service.
