Elba Island

An island with lots of stories and thousands of colours, with towns by the sea (Marciana Marina, Marina di Campo, Porto Azzurro and Rio Marina), its ancient hill towns (Capoliveri, Rio nell'Elba, Marciana and Poggio) and the fortified Medici city of Portoferraio. From the small towns of Marciana, Poggio, Chiessi and Pomonte you can reach the peak of Mount Capanne on foot (it can also be reached by a cabin car), from here you can enjoy a marvellous view of all of the island. The flowering of the Mediterranean vegetation is an explosion of colours with a rich variety of botanical and animal species. A crystal clear sea pulsing with life, on whose seabed there are still ruins of antique galleons and ships, archaeological sites of undisputed value. Old footpaths have been rediscovered and cleared all over the island for anyone who loves hiking.

Portoferraio is the capital and main port of the island and it has just under 12,000 inhabitants. Those arriving by ferry are unlikely to remain unmoved by the particular beauty offered by the dock with the fortresses that dominates it.

Rio

From 2018 it is again under the Rio municipality together with Rio Marina. Rio ElbaĀ is one of the oldest villages on the island with origins in the Bronze Age, and retains many traces of its past.

Porto Azzurro, an old fishing and agricultural town, is overlooked by Saint Giacomo fort, it is the heart of society life on the Island of Elba, today it is one of its most celebrated seaside resorts.

Set in a strategic position on a terraced hill, the town of Capoliveri started life as a highland fortress, dominating the Mola and Stella gulfs. Historically Capoliveri is one the richest places on Elba, it was an Etruscan settlement: many finds have been made in the necropolis of Profico not far from the historic centre.Ā

The town of Marciana Marina lies in the centre of a small gulf, surrounded by a rich forest of pine, chestnut and oak trees. With its picturesque neighbourhoods with narrow granite streets and pastel-coloured houses overlooking the sea, it is one of the best-known places on the island of Elba.

Situated 375 metres above sea level and below Mount Capanne, Marciana is among the oldest towns on the Elba Island. Documenting its past is the Archaeological Museum. The air in Marciana is as fresh as the mountain air, even though the sea is only five kilometres away.

The main town and seat of the municipality of Campo nell'Elba is Marina di Campo, located in the southern part of the island. The town is particularly popular with tourists for its sandy beach, the longest on the island, and its small centre, full of shops, restaurants and small, characteristic bars.Ā
